  Field Barn with red doors – it is quite usual to see remote barns with brightly painted doors

  Swaledale (pronounced 'swardle' locally) barns and walls – a typical view showing the patterns formed by the dry stone walls and field barns

  Dent Head Viaduct. One of the lesser-known Dales, Dentdale is a delightful place with the feeling of a separate little world.

  More dry-stone wall patterns, showing off the undulating landscape
  so typical of the area. Building dry-stone walls is an ancient Dales craft still very much alive today. As no mortar is used, the selection and positioning of the stones requires a great deal of skill and good dry-stone wallers are in great demand in the area. A well-made dry-stone wall will last for hundreds of years and many of the walls in the area date back centuries.
