Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales

(This page may take a while to load because there are lots of photos - but it's worth the wait! Thanks for your patience.)

Stone House Hotel is set in an acre of old English gardens, on the south-facing side of Wensleydale. Views from the hotel and gardens are stunning.

The world-famous Aysgarth Falls, where the River Ure cascades over three spectacular falls in a tree-lined gorge, are only 8 miles away. A trip to Aysgarth Falls can easily extend to a half- or whole-day visit. You'll find ample parking at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Centre which provides plenty of information about the area. In the Centre, the excellent Coppice Coffee Shop (known locally as Karen's) offers a menu which includes gluten-free and dairy-free dishes. There is a network of well-marked footpaths around the Falls area and through Freeholders Wood. Across the River Ure you'll find St Andrew's Church perched high above the Falls and with the largest churchyard in England.

14th-century Bolton Castle in the village of Castle Bolton is only a little further. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for six months in 1569. The Castle is open to visitors from the beginning of March until the end of October and includes a Tea Room and recently reinstated gardens including herb garden, rose garden, vineyard, maze and bowling green.

Visit England's highest single-drop waterfall - Hardraw Force - only one mile away from the hotel. You can actually walk behind the waterfall, which is situated in the wooded grounds of the Green Dragon Inn. Two outdoor events - The Gathering (music festival) and the Hardraw Scaur Brass Band Contest - are held there each year in a natural outdoor amphitheatre.

Hawes - capital of Upper Wensleydale in the Yorkshire Dales[+]
View of Hawes from Stone House Hotel

Stone House is only half a mile from the bustling market town of Hawes - street market on Tuesdays. No visit to Hawes is complete without a visit to the Wensleydale Creamery - home of real Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese. You can see Wensleydale and other cheeses being made, buy some to take home with you and perhaps have a bite to eat in their Restaurant.
